MS Windows - PPTP / MPPE HOWTO
This document will provide an easy step-by-step configuration guide for PPTP/MPPE VPN on Microsoft Windows.

PPTP with MPPE (crypto extension) is a widely-used VPN protocol. Microsoft Windows already includes a PPTP client, so there's no need to install additional software.

It's true that MPPE doesn't provide perfect security (there are some flaws which can possibly be exploited). However, if you don't need perfect industry standard encryption, but want speed, easy of use and simplicity, then we recommend PPTP.

Below are screenshots taken from a PPTP VPN configuration taken on our MS Windows PC. Unfortunately, the language is English, but you should get the point.

Open your MS Windows Control Panel and click on Network and Internet Connections. Now click on Create a new connection.

You should see the New Connection Wizard screen now ...

A VPN connection is what we want ...

On the next screen, chose Virtual Private Network connection.

Chose a name for this connection. We recommend SurfoNym VPN.

If you're connected with a static internet link (e.g. DSL, cable, LAN) then chose Do not dial the initial connection!

This one's important: enter vpn.surfonym.com as hostname!

Now you should be done! Click finish to install the new connection.

Open the connection to start the VPN. Enter your SurfoNym username and password, then click Connect.

Your PPTP VPN should be active now! You can check with tools like ping, traceroute, netstat and ipconfig.
